not sure on the answer but one article says they fill up and become heavy, J. Peasemold if you are a good swimmer why not try it an a safe distance / place
you could go to your local swimming pool and ask if it can be done or even tested with one of the members if you cant swim yourself, tell them you are writing the story etc and wanted to know the answer.

By J. Peasemold Gruntfuttock - what would happen to this girl's boots if she swam? Sun 25/06/23 18:43:16 GMT
I'm writing a story about two girls and part of the plot has them swimming about half a mile in the sea wearing their Hunter wellies. I don't really want to have them simply remove their boots right away.
If the storyline has them falling into the sea wearing these boots, what would likely happen?
Would they be able to swim half a mile wearing them? Or, would they likely drown, if they didn't remove them?
Also, is it likely their boots would fall off during swimming, or one of them, or might they stay on (after, say, ten minutes of swimming)?
As I say, I don't want them to just remove them or kick them off as soon as they enter the water. I want to write this realistically, taking my best guess what would happen if they had to swim wearing these boots:
