I just thought i would add:

be friendly, don't try to hide. Smile and wave. And maybe that might encourage your witnesses to have the courage to ask "what are you doing over there?" (as opposed to having to confront your suspicious activities OR call the po-po?)

Or if the witnesses are already there in full view of your swimming area, confidently approach them and ask the question "have you ever heard of someone that HAD to swim in wellies?" and then you can start the cover story about how you wondered that, and you decided to test out the theories??

(this is kind'a giving me some ideas of my own, there is a BEAUTIFUL park near where i live, but there is ALWAYS many folks walking/jogging/biking all over that place!

I'm sure they don't wear wellies in Jumanji but thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking something similar though, maybe like "I sometimes go fishing next to the river and I was wondering If I could swim fully clothed, just in case I fall in the river wearing wellies whilst fishing".

you could be fully dressed in some kind of "outdoor" outfit (or even something basic like t-shirt and jeans) if anyone asks what you are doing, you can explain you saw a disaster movie where the characters had to swim fully clothed, and you wondered if you would be able to do that for yourself if you found yourself in a similar situation!

Jumanji * MIGHT * be a good example to use... or any other movie with the required scene for you to mention it?

As Laura says, a quite pond (or the least crowded beach?) would be a good choice.

there are thousands of quite ponds all over the uk, test the depth first incase you get in trouble wearing wellies

I would really like to try swimming wearing my wellies, it's killing me in anticipation of what it will feel like.

So, where can I do this, in the UK?

I feel really embarrassed that someone will see me and I want to do it in private. I've thought about renting a hotel and taking a swim in the pool at midnight. Or, maybe the sea would be a better idea.

Either way, would it be legal, are there any laws against doing it? I'll make sure I don't trespass in area I'm not allowed.

What do I do or say if someone sees me (either a member of the public or somebody in authority)?

Also, should I make sure there's a lifeguard around? I'm an OK swimmer but I don't know it might be dangerous when swimming with the wellies on.
