I got my first pool last year, one of the above ground blowup ones too. And it's cheap and easy. I only filled it up once, and then just stayed on top of the maintenance--checking the chlorine level, running the filter as recommended, and filtering out leaves and debris (which I always seemed to do fully clothed for some weird reason!) Filters are cheap, and I never noticed any fibers in it even though sometimes I wore sweaters and always wore jeans.
I researched pool maintenance and found a site which advocates a very simple method: Bleach, baking soda, and Borax (the BBB method). Sounds sketchy, I admit, but no worse than the expensive strange chemicals Dupont tries to convince you that you need. This pool forum helped me out a lot:

Don't worry. The absolute worst that could happen is that you have to drain the pool and start over (avoiding your earlier mistake). And my experience is that the cost of the water is more than the cost of electricity (unless you're heating the pool). Good luck. Be sure to post pictures when you have your first pool party, okay? :-)

By wetwhiteandblue - Mon 26/03/07 03:58:01 GMT Great insite WK! I've had a pool for the past 20 years, but all of mine have been the 8 foot diameter, 2 foot deep blow-up pools with included filter and cover. Great disposable pool from you local Wal-Mart for under $100! Once a week I empty it, clean it out and refill it. Lots of fun, very low maintanence and at the end of the season, I just dispose of it, sans the filter. Add a blow up lounge or a few tubes and you can have as much fun as a full size inground without the fear of drowning! |

By Liquidladies/Waterlogged Production - weinerking@bellsouth.net Mon 26/03/07 03:48:42 GMT Website: http://www.liquidladies.org depending on where you live and how warm it gets in the spring.. Open as sonn as possible to avoid aglee growing in standing water or buy a cover for 300.00 and cover it during the winter.
Now the cost. electricity is the least of your worries.....You will have to vacuum this pool at least once a week or have an automatic vacuum do it (cost extra)....Plus you need to skim it daily geting all flies and crap out of it. Clean your skimmer basker each week and filter basket. Backwash the filter system at least onmce a week depending on usage of the pool.... Remember this for a wetlook person.. NO cut off stings of shorts jeans frayed or fuzzy sweaters. These things over a peried of weeks will clog your filter system and cost you maitenece repairs....
NOW the cost.....Expect start up cost each spring to be about $250-$300 in Chemicals along.....Shock, chloriene, algiecide, PH chemicals and more. This is just start up... you must keep the water tested and in bal;ance the whole year or you will get green water..............Pools are fun, but lots of work and if you got the money, hire a pool company to come out weekly and do it 4 you.....They are not cheap.....but reliable and lets U just play in the pool without worries....
have fun if you get one, but you have been warned by a person who has had an inground pool for 8 years.

By Russ - Mon 26/03/07 02:58:27 GMT Thinking of adding an in-ground pool to our backyard. People are telling me how bad of an investment it is, and all I can think about is how great it would be to have one.
One of the things they're saying that scares me is how much my homeowners insurance will go up. I'm going to ask my agent, of course, but is it really that bad? What other things do I need to worry about? I hear my electricity costs will go up an average of $60 (averaged out over the year). It's only going to be 30' by 12' due to utility easement limitations in my yard.
Thanks
