You could also know by who was throwing the party. Some pool parties would just be poolside with nobody getting wet. Others were know for almost everyone ending up in the water. So if a woman would go to one of those parties she'd know what to expect and be prepared for it. And it's normally easier if a party is more of the dressy style - if the women wear dresses and the men suits it's harder to tell which MEN that are ok to go in - women usually then put their vulnerable stuff in their purse and you can tell whether that one is going in or not, as opposed to the guys who have everything in their pockets. But if you are partying with good friends you'd usually know anyhow wjo's ok to do it to and who's not.
