In the UK it is harder to get a credit card than a debit card.

Also I have found that buying off UK web sites often there is a fee for using a credit card, whereas there are almost never fees in the UK for using debit cards.

The regulations vary from card to card, as some debit cards (electron, delta) qualify as visa cards and the banks use the same procedures to recover money as they do for visa cards.

Unfortunately, whereas US and Canadian credit card rules are a gift to Americans and Canadians who want to buy something and then pretend they didn't, as they refund your money without question and sting the seller with massive chargeback charges, then refuse to co-operate in helping the defrauded seller recover the money or even trace the fraudulent purchaser, in Britain, no money is refunded until a properly regulated process is gone through by which the bank has to give both sides the chance to state their case.

Also in some countries credits cards are less accepted than debit cards.

You may think that debit cards are a good thing, and maybe for some people they are. However...

In Canada at least, debit cards (and direct-debit payments in general) do not have the same degree of controls (the system, government legislation) around them that credit cards and cheques do. If there is ever a dispute between you and your bank over a debit, the money is already gone from your account and the onus is on you to prove you didn't authorize it in order to get your bank's co-operation to get the money back. I believe that fraud activity committed in connection with debit cards now exceeds that of credit cards! Besides, there are always transaction fees; many credit cards are completely no-fee. The last time a bank gave me a debit card to use with an account there, the first thing I did was DESTROY IT!

I don't know what it's like in the UK or anywhere else in the world, but the banks in Canada are only too happy to give you a credit card. Provided you always pay off the amount owing before it attracts any interest, it can be as cheap to use as a debit card (or cheaper), and it's a whole lot safer.

If you are having difficulty getting a credit card, I suppose you have no choice... otherwise, I think it's a far better option.

Paypal now accepts "Switch" and "Solo" cards. That means that you are now able, as I am, to buy products from Wam sites all around the world that sell through Paypal.

I was really pleased when I noticed this yesterday, I have often felt very victimised because of not having a credit card! It is very difficult to make on-line purchases if you don't have a Visa or Mastercard. Well done Paypal for leading the way and accepting Debit cards.

To everyone in fact, you no longer have to borrow to buy!
